Chun Lee is a musician/composer from Taipei, Taiwan who now lives and
works in London. Initially trained as a classical musician, he became
increasingly fascinated by the technological and experimental aspect of
contemporary music. He now focuses his compositional practice on
algorithmic/generative music using software tools such as Pd. In addition
to his compositional practice, he is also working towards his doctoral
degree in Electronic Arts at Middlesex University.

Chun Lee has presented his works in both the UK and Europe and has also
worked in collaboration with other digital arts practitioners from
various disciplines.

I am particularly drawn to the concept of artworks that have no
predetermined structure or appearance. In other words, works of art
which are in constant evolution, like everything else in the world.
Evolution, both physical and conceptual, is often driven by simple
rules; when executed, transformation can take place and produce complex
results. Such rules of transformation may be seen as methods of
navigating through the immense search space of a given problem domain.
For me, these transformational rules become the tools of composition,
and the performances are thus journeys throughout the sonic space. The
aesthetic satisfaction is no longer the expression of personal emotions
and sentiments; it is instead the mastery over conceptual systems that
reflects the fundamental dualities of all things, such as freedom and
constraints, emergence and divergence.

PD (aka Pure Data) is a real-time graphical programming environment for
audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of
the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW
Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette and
company at IRCAM. The core of Pd is written and maintained by Miller
Puckette and includes the work of many developers, making the whole
package very much a community effort.

Pd was created to explore ideas of how to further refine the Max
paradigm with the core ideas of allowing data to be treated in a more
open-ended way and opening it up to applications outside of audio and
MIDI, such as graphics and video.

Pd is free software and can be downloaded either as an OS-specific
package, source package, or directly from CVS. Pd was written to be
multi-platform and therefore is quite portable; versions exist for
Win32, IRIX, GNU/Linux, BSD, and MacOS X running on anything from a
PocketPC to an old Mac to a brand new PC. It is possible to write
externals and patches that work with Max/MSP and Pd using flext and
cyclone.

well, I am no rock star yet but a little acknowledgment to say thanks
for people who helped me;) I like to thank everyone in my life for
making me who I am, especially my mom, dad, brother and Inna,
lecturers in Middlesex University for supporting my research, and all my
friends for being such wonderful company over the years.
